Palestine (the Poppy)
In Palestinian art and culture, the flower has become a strong symbol of both land, memory, and resistance. The poppy’s intense red colour is often associated with blood and with the many people who have lost their lives in the conflict. At the same time, its fragile petals and its ability to grow in disturbed soil point to an enduring connection to the place. In the current situation in Gaza, the poppy appears together with other symbols, including the watermelon, which in Palestinian visual language is often used as an indirect reference to the colours of the Palestinian flag. In art, poetry, and political imagery, the poppy thus represents both mourning and persistence.

Palæstina (valmuen)
I palæstinensisk kunst og kultur er blomsten blevet et stærkt symbol på både land, erindring og modstand. Valmuens intense røde farve forbindes ofte med blod og med de mange mennesker, der har mistet livet i konflikten. Samtidig peger dens skrøbelige kronblade og dens evne til at vokse i forstyrret jord på en vedvarende tilknytning til stedet. I den nuværende situation i Gaza optræder valmuen sammen med andre symboler, blandt andet vandmelonen, der i palæstinensisk billedsprog ofte bruges som en indirekte reference til flagets farver. I kunst, poesi og politiske billeder fungerer valmuen derfor som et tegn på både sorg og fortsat liv.
